Enjoy Today. Worry Tomorrow.
This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it. — Psalm 118:24
It’s believed that King David wrote Psalm 118. I like to think he woke up that morning after having a long sleepless night worried about kingdom matters:
- His own son wanted to kill him.
- The kingdom staff probably wanted a pay raise.
- Maybe there was a battle in two weeks, and he wasn’t sure how it would turn out.
- He was probably thinking of all the other kingdoms that wanted him dead.
- One of his wives probably no longer respected him after the whole Uriah saga.
- He’d probably gotten a bad doctor’s report the previous week.
- He was probably gaining more weight.
- Maybe he was walking through the valley of the shadow of death.
I don’t know what was going on that morning, but I’m sure he was tempted to worry about something.
But just before he could walk to his ‘worry chair’ (yes, I believe David had a worry chair. Okay I’m joking). Just before he could walk to his ‘worry chair’, he thought to himself, ‘Wait a minute, this is the day the Lord has made. I can rejoice in it or I can be depressed. Do I have reason to be depressed? Yes. But are those reasons happening right now, at this very minute? No. I know there is a war coming up, but that's in the future. I know I made some mistakes, but that’s in the past. Right now, at this moment, on this day, there is nothing to worry about, and I will rejoice and be glad in it.’
Dear reader, let’s not worry about a past we can’t change or a future we can’t control. Today is a gift, and that’s why it’s called the present.
